In the quarterfinals of the WTA tournament in Acapulco Stefanie Vögele manages a coup. As number 183 in the world she defeated the top seed US Open winner Sloane Stephens from the USA 6: 4, 5: 7, 6: 2.
The first two sets were very varied and balanced and brought a total of eight breaks. The 27-year-old swiss player went in the third set with another service breakthrough 2: 0 in the lead, whereupon the three years younger American immediately counter-attack succeeded. After the 2: 2, however, decided Vögele until the last of each game for themselves. For the breaks to 4: 2 and 6: 2 she needed only one chance.
In the ninth semi-final of her career, the Swiss will face number 4 Chinese Zhang Shuai, world number 33, or unseated Swede Rebecca Peterson (WTA139). Vögele has not played against either of them.
Last time, Stefanie Vögele was in a semi-final in April 2016 in Istanbul. She has never been able to move to a final at the WTA level.
For the swiss player the Mexican coastal town of Acapulco is her lucky place, already the previous victories against the more than 120 positions better classified Tatjana Maria from Germany and Maria Sakkari from Greece honorable successes. However, after beating the world number 13 Stephens, she comes close to her most valuable career victories. Her only success against a top 10 player she won in 2013 in Charleston, when she beat the then number 10 Caroline Wozniacki also in three groups. Against Stephens Vögele played three times that year – and won two of these games.
